Enabling Location Services

Museum Without Walls

Important: Museum Without Walls is designed to be experienced on a mobile device. The app is not optimized for desktop browsers. For the best experience, please use the app on your smartphone or tablet.

Location services are essential for Museum Without Walls to provide location-based features and experiences. If you're having trouble with location detection in the app, this guide will help you ensure that location services are properly enabled on your mobile device.

Why Location Services Might Not Be Working

Location services might not be working in Museum Without Walls for several reasons:

Enabling Location Services on Your Mobile Device
Android Devices

Follow these steps to enable location services on your Android device:

1 Open Settings: Swipe down from the top of your screen and tap the gear icon, or find the Settings app in your app drawer.
2 Access Location Settings: Tap on "Location" (on some devices, you might need to go to "Security & Location" or "Privacy" first).
3 Enable Location Services: Toggle the switch at the top to the ON position.
4 Improve Accuracy: Tap on "Advanced" or "Location Services" or "Google Location Accuracy" (the exact name varies by device) and ensure that "Google's Location Accuracy" or "Improve Location Accuracy" is enabled. This uses Wi-Fi, mobile networks, and sensors to improve location precision.
5 Check App Permissions: Go to Settings > Apps > Museum Without Walls > Permissions > Location, and select either "Allow only while using the app" or "Allow all the time" depending on your needs.

Note for Samsung devices: You may need to go to Settings > Biometrics and security > Location > Improve accuracy, and enable both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning.

iOS Devices (iPhone & iPad)

Follow these steps to enable location services on your iOS device:

1 Open Settings: Tap the Settings app on your home screen.
2 Access Privacy Settings: Scroll down and tap "Privacy & Security" (or just "Privacy" on older iOS versions).
3 Enable Location Services: Tap "Location Services" and toggle the switch at the top to the ON position.
4 Configure App Permissions: While still in Location Services, scroll down to find "Museum Without Walls" and tap on it.
5 Set Permission Level: Select the appropriate option:
  • Never: The app cannot access your location
  • Ask Next Time Or When I Share: The app will prompt you each time it needs your location
  • While Using the App: The app can access your location only when it's open
  • Always: The app can access your location even when it's running in the background
6 Enable Precise Location: For iOS 14 and later, make sure the "Precise Location" toggle is enabled. When disabled, iOS provides an approximate location instead of your exact position, which may not be accurate enough for Museum Without Walls to work properly.

Important: If you're using iOS 15 or later, you may need to enable location access each time you use the app for the first few uses before being given the option to "Always Allow" if the app needs background location access.

Note: When the Museum Without Walls website requests your location in Safari, you'll see a prompt. Select "Allow" to grant access.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

If you've confirmed that location permissions are enabled but Museum Without Walls still can't detect your location, try these additional troubleshooting steps:

  1. Restart the App: Close the Museum Without Walls app completely and reopen it.
  2. Restart Your Device: Sometimes a simple restart can resolve permission and service issues.
  3. Check for App Updates: Make sure you have the latest version of Museum Without Walls installed.
  4. Clear Browser Cache (if using browser version): If you're using the web version in a mobile browser, clear your browser's cache and cookies.
  5. Disable VPN: If you're using a VPN, temporarily disable it as it can mask your actual location.
  6. Check for System Updates: Ensure your device's operating system is up to date.
  7. Move to an Open Area: GPS signals work best outdoors with a clear view of the sky. Buildings, trees, and other obstacles can interfere with GPS signals.
  8. Wait a Few Minutes: Sometimes it takes a few minutes for your device to get an accurate GPS fix, especially if you haven't used location services recently.
  9. Try Wi-Fi Only or Cellular Only: In some cases, switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data can help with location accuracy.
  10. Try a Different Browser: If you're using the web version and one browser isn't working, try another mobile browser like Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox.
