Frequently Asked Questions
1. How does this work?
The Minnesota Then web app utilizes GPS on your mobile device (location services must be active) to present a firsthand glimpse at history. When nearing a location, your device automatically helps you uncover the story, providing access to images and an audio narrative at each site.
2. What is the duration of the experience?
Everything is designed to be done at your pace, allowing you the freedom to allocate as little or as much time as you’d like. The audio files at each site are typically three to six minutes long.
3. Are the sites safe?
Yes, we prioritize safety by utilizing publicly accessible routes and locations. However, we advise all participants to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times. While we strive to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience, it is essential to exercise caution, especially when crossing streets or exploring unfamiliar areas. Your safety is paramount, and we encourage you to prioritize it.
4. Does this cost anything?
No. At Minnesota Then, we believe in making local history accessible to everyone. That's why everything we offer is free to access on our website. While we greatly appreciate donations, our platform is open for all to enjoy at no cost.
5. Can I download locations for offline use?
Currently, Minnesota Then operates as a web application and necessitates an active internet connection, either via WiFi or cellular data, for seamless usage.
6. Why can't I find a a location?
Geolocation is very fickle. Using GPS can pose potential challenges, including signal accuracy affected by obstacles, battery limitations, and unreliable network coverage, which can impact the overall experience. Usually exiting the app and trying again will solve the issue.
7. Why does my user icon jump around on the screen, especially when I am not moving?
External factors can impact GPS signal quality, including your device, the weather, and nearby buildings. More often than not, GPS 'drifting' won't negatively impact your experience.
